The Volcano Road was opened in 1852. It left the Carson Route west of Tragedy Spring and went to the town of Volcano. Much of the original trail follows the Highway 88 corridor. In 1862 construction of the the Amador to Carson Valley Road was begun. By 1865 the new road was completed with many side cuts that made travel easier.
During the 2017 season, the California-Nevada Chapter working with the Eldorado National Forest began working to discover remnants of the original 1852 wagon trail.
Several trail segments were found including a pristine class one segment. More work is planned for the 2018 season.
