This is an excellent site with lots of info about Professor Lind's 1941 trip across the Black Rock Desert and through the High Rock Canyon area to Fandango Pass and Goose Lake just across the California / Nevada border. It is impressive to see his photos of the 1930's era automobiles (a woody, no less) in the desert when we depend on high-clearance four-wheel drive trucks. I am personally fond of the photo of the coupe "mired in the desert" up to its axles in water :-)
