President - Steve Knight

48sknight@charter.net

Steve and Patty Knight live in Carson City, Nevada, where Steve is Executive Director/Administrator of the Silver State High School. Steve describes his history of involvement with emigrant trails, OCTA, and his perspective as chapter president, as follows:

"I joined OCTA around 1995 and was soon elected to the board, then elected VP. I had to decline the nomination for president when Patty and I moved to Las Vegas to start a new school in 2000. When we returned to Carson City in 2004, I was able to reactivate my board membership and accept the nomination for President for 2006-2008. I have a degree in Geology due to my interest in mining and ghost towns. I have traveled and researched the trails for many years and saw the Trails West markers - through Trails West I became aware of OCTA and joined both organizations. I am astounded that I missed the Carson City OCTA conference years ago as I would have joined then. Although my family emigrated west, we did it further north and are one of the pioneering and founding families of Vancouver, British Columbia. My mom’s German family (Wolf-Klemm) emigrated west in the 1880s to Fresno, along the way they met and married in Nebraska. I especially enjoy the outings and sitting by the fire listening to experts like Don Buck, Tom Dougherty, Tom Hunt and the many others. My wife Patty is membership chair. I wish I could do more, perhaps when I retire. As president, my goal is to attract new members and retain the old by putting on interesting meetings and encourage more outings. OCTA is a great organization and does important research and preservation, I am proud to be a part of it."
